The Jewelry Box
by Sarah Blewett – Grade 5
The Jewelry box is a wonderful story about a girl called Shelley. One day Shelley finds a magical Jewelry box and a puff of blue mist comes out when she opens it. What will happen? Is that bad? Read the story and find out what will happen to Shelley.
One foggy morning, Shelley got up and got ready for school. She looks in the mirror, “Same as always”, Shelley says sadly. “Bright red hair, freckles and a long nose.” Shelley hears her mom in the kitchen and goes downstairs. She says to her mom, “I want a new cellphone! Everyone’s got a new one.” Shelley’s mom says “I just got you a new cellphone”. “But their’s are better than mine!” Shelley replies. “Oh all right, I’ll get you a new one.”
Shelley went to school and was playing with her friend Sarah. After school she invited her friend over to play. Her friend came to her house and they were playing ball. Suddenly Shelly kicked the ball over the wall. “Oh no,” Sarah shouted, “you kicked it into Mr. McFeen’s yard. You know how much he hates kids. Whatever shall we do?”
Just then Shelley’s mom called them and said she had made cookies. So Shelley and Sarah went inside. “These cookies don’t have chocolate chips in!” Shelley shouted crossly. “Sorry Shelley, there was none left” said Shelley’s mom. “I WANT CHOCOLATE CHIPS!” demanded Shelley angrily.
Later that day when Sarah had gone, Shelley crept quietly into Mr. McFeen’s yard to get the ball back. She climbed through many overgrown, thorny bushes and got cuts and bruises everywhere. Finally she found the ball and next to the ball was a strange looking box. It had weeds and plants growing all over it. It looked like it had been there for decades, maybe centuries. She took a closer look. Now she noticed it had some strange writing on it written in gold. She said to herself, “It will make a good jewelry box.” So Shelley took the box and the ball with here and went home.
When she got home she ran to her room carrying the jewelry box. When she was in her room she opened it. A strange blue mist came our. Suddenly the mist made a funny shape with eyes, a nose and a mouth. Shelley stepped back as she watched the mist.
Then a strange thing happened. The mist began to talk. It said, “Thank you for freeing me, it is very squashy inside that box.” Shelley said, “What are you?” he said, “You don’t know what I am and I know everything about you?” Shelley asked “What do you know about me?” He answered, “I know you’re a greedy girl who never appreciates anything.” “I am not!” Shelley said crossly. “But never mind that, what are you?” He said, “I am a genie.”
Shelley had heard of genies, but never seen one. The genie said to Shelley. “Because you freed me I will grant you three wishes.” “Three wishes!” Shelley shouted while she jumped up and down with excitement. “So”, the genie said, “what do you want to wise for?” Without thinking she said “MONEY! Lots of money.” So Shelley got lots of money.
Shelley bought lots of things with her money, like another cellphone, ipod, and lots of other things. But she was not happy. So she decided to wish for more money. Shelley went to the shops and bought more things. When Shelley finished her money she was still not happy.
One day Shelley was reading a newspaper and in it was a picture of a very poor family who needed money. Shelley thought to herself and said, “I still have one more wish.” Shelley ran upstairs to her room, opened the box with the genie in, and wished that the poor family in the newspaper would get what she had. She wished for that because when she wished for something it just made her unhappy and greedier. Shelley also gave all her things to the poor family and that made Shelley feel even better.
So it all ended with a very happy family and a very happy Shelley.
